The Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary held their Annual Awards Banquet at Unity Church of God. Approximately 100 volunteers, guest and hospital officials were in attendance. Unity hosted the event, providing the meal, servers and décor for hospital volunteers and their guests.

After hearing guest speaker Mr. William “Dink” NeSmith, Chairman of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, deliver a humorous and encouraging message, 35 members received pins for reaching milestone hour levels ranging from 100 to 14,000 hours. The Auxiliary, as a whole, volunteered a total of 16,466 hours during the last 12 months. That number of hours equates to approximately 8 full-time employees. This particular group of 35 pin winners has given a total of 86,700 hours of service in their lifetimes to the hospital, equating to approximately 42 full-time employees.

The Auxiliary presented Joe Ierardi, CEO of Wayne Memorial Hospital, a check for $20,000 to be used to purchase two arthroscopy trays, instruments used in knee, hip and shoulder scopes and replacements. These funds were raised in the last 12 months through vendor sales, gift shop sales and thrift shop sales.

Hospital officials thanked those at Unity who made the dinner possible, specifically George Moxley, Miki Apler, Gene Moody and Jimmy Lord. Among other recognitions were those of current officers including President J. B. Perry, Vice President Janice Ginn , Treasurer Dot Coleman, Assistant Treasurer Val Grimes, Recording Secretary Martha Dent, Corresponding Secretary Barbara Strickland and Historian Elizabeth Dubberly.

The Auxiliary invites anyone with three hours a week to be a part of their group. Volunteers serve in various areas including the information desk, gift shop, one-day surgery waiting area, intensive care waiting area, thrift shop, transport station and welcome shuttle. Anyone interested in joining the organization may pick up an application at the front desk of the hospital or call 912-530-3115 with an address to have one mailed.
