At the age of 50, Sherry Sertich believed she would never be able to walk without pain. After suffering a basketball injury in high school, she spent decades with pain in her left knee. Because of the pain in her left knee, she placed more weight on her right leg, causing damage to that knee as well. Today, after two total knee replacements, she not only walks pain-free, she bicycles, climbs stairs and is able to enjoy her life again.
A Registered Nurse, Sertich has worked in the nursery at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Jesup for 17 years. She not only works at Wayne Memorial, she decided to have her surgery there. “I couldn’t have made a better choice,” she said, when asked if she had thought of going to a larger hospital. “Dr. Hein was the best and the staff at Wayne Memorial took excellent care of me. Having surgery in my hometown gave me easy access to my doctor’s appointments, as well as physical therapy.” She adds that a larger hospital does not necessarily mean better care. In fact, she still remembers one particular nurse who took care of her. “She was so patient with me,” she shares with a smile. That same nurse, Sue Crews, is now a weekend supervisor at the hospital.
Sertich is part of a team that will provide a total joint education program at Wayne Memorial Hospital for anyone who is interested in, or already scheduled for, joint replacement surgery. The class will provide education about each step of the process from scheduling surgery to home care to post-op physical therapy. Sertich and other experienced patients will also be present to answer any questions and share their own experiences.
Classes will be held once a month. Dates for those classes for the remainder of 2012 are April 11, May 9, June 11, July 11, August 8, September 12, October 10, November 14 and December 12. Interested parties may register for the class by calling (912) 530-3117 or emailing chand@wmhweb.com.
